When is the Drive-Point Piezometer used?

The Solinst® Piezometer works best in sands and is suitable for driving directly into the ground. It is most commonly used for:

  • Sparge points
  • Ground water sampling, incl. VOCs
  • Water level monitoring
  • Contaminant plume delineations
  • Soil gas sampling
  • UST monitoring
  • Site Characterisations
  • Product Removal
What is a Drive-Point Piezometer?

Standard Configuration MODEL 615
The Drive-Point Piezometer from Solinst® comprises of a 31mm (1.25”) stainless steel probe or drive-point. The back of the piezometer attaches to 20mm or 3/4” NPT pipe. The probe has a 32mm (1.25”) internal stainless steel cylindrical filter screen that prevents clogging as groundwater enters the probe through the visible inlet holes. Access to the internal filter section is via a 12mm (1/2”) barbed fitting attachment for a sample line.

Model 615N

  • The Model 615N has no barbed opening at the back of the probe and is sufficient to allow a 12mm (1/2”) bailer to be lowered down into the probe to collect a sample. Also water level or narrow diameter interface meter probes.
  • This feature allows use of a Waterra pump or vacuum pump hose to take water samples.
  • The diameter is large enough to allow narrow-probed water level meters and interface probes.
  • Because the Drive-Point Piezometer uses simple 20mm (3/4”) NPT pipe extensions, installing a Solinst Drive-Point Piezometer with standard pipe extensions will in effect give you 20mm OD well.

Model 615S

The Model 615S is a two piece shielded version of the 615. It has all the features of the standard unit but with a stainless steel shield or shroud. The inner piece is the screen and screws to the bottom of the drive rod. The outer shield with point is disposable and left in the ground. The shield ensures that the screen does not clog or smear during the driving procedure. Once the desired sampling depth has been reached, the piezometer is retracted. This exposes the screened inlet holes to the sampling zone. When retracted the point with integral shield with point is left in the ground.
Available in 150 and 300 mm lengths. Available in PVC and S.S. Replacement shields also available.

How it works?
  • Any direct push or drilling technology, including a portable hammer or slide hammer can be used for the installation.
  • The inner barbed fitting allows connection of 12 mm x 16 mm (1/2" x 5/8")LDPE or Teflon sample tubing. This prevents sample water from contacting the steel extension casing, and maintains high sample integrity even if the inexpensive carbon steel extensions are used. A range of extensions can also be provided.
  • A single use, optional filter shield avoids smearing and plugging of the filter during driving.
  • The strengthened connector at the top of the drive-point acts as an annular seal which avoids contamination from higher levels in the hole.
  • The added strength also reduces thread damage during installation. Extension couplings are similarly strengthened to create a more rugged piezometer.
  • They can be installed permanently as wells, or used once and removed.
